Link Commander: Installation and Operation

Open the setup file in the usual way. A simple wizard will then guide you through all of the usual installation steps. If you are already familiar with installing programs you will find this very easy. If this is your first time then all you need to do is click on the 'Next' button and follow the instructions in the resulting windows. The first time it starts up, Link Commander creates a completely new collection from your current bookmarks, local folders and quick launch applications. At this stage you are given an opportunity to select the sources for bookmark imports and to immediately synchronize the new collection with Internet Explorer Favorites if they are present.

As you will see when the program starts, the bookmark database includes bookmarks from any supported web browsers installed on your system as well as other local bookmarks. This means that you can access networked and local bookmarked resources from a single point of reference. You can also export your bookmark collection into various browser formats and synchronize it with other bookmark collections.

Rich text export and import capabilities are available from both the main window and various context menus invoked using right mouse-click. As well as the native formats of supported browsers, it is possible to export a bookmark collection into HTML, XML and RTF formats.

Bookmark import, however, is not the only way to add new bookmarks to a collection. The program offers a dedicated tool that can add active bookmarks from any application, Clipboard or History list. In the Supervisor window you can also select target folders for new bookmarks. The same options are available from the context menu in the main window. Just click the folder in your currently open collection and select from the bookmarks that Link Commander has found. Here you can also access a wide range of available file options such as Rename, Copy to, Move to, Delete, etc.

In the context menu you will find even more unique features. For example, Link Commander can verify a bookmark to see if a referenced resource is still available. Automatic verification of the whole collection and the deletion of duplicate bookmarks is available to ensure faster searches and access to resources. On the topic of searches, you will notice that Link Commander performs incremental searches on bookmark names, URLs, keywords and site descriptions. As you type a word, the list of found items narrows down to your required search result in the blink of an eye. You will also notice another neat feature in the search list. Where appropriate, the keywords and site descriptions are retrieved automatically to provide you with more complete information on your bookmarked resources.

The intuitive and customizable interface of Link Commander is a major feature that makes your bookmarks so easy to manage. For example, the program toolbar automatically adjusts itself to reflect your most used options. A two-panel window facilitates easy drag-and-drop editing and organizing of your bookmark collections. Multiple tabs allow instant switching between bookmark collections, built-in browser, properties and search pages, all with a single mouse click.

The unique "Drop Trap" feature deserves a special mention. This is a star-shaped desktop icon that gives instant access to the important features of this "star of a program". You may drag and drop a bookmark from anywhere onto the Drop Trap and it is immediately added to the current Link Commander bookmark collection. Right-click on the Drop trap for instant access to the program's options and tools.
